Australia Awards Prime Minister’s Pacific Program
Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
Years active: 2010 – 2013
The Australia Awards Prime Minister’s Pacific Program provided work placements and professional development activities to supplement the academic programs of postgraduate Australia Awards scholars from the Pacific region.
Each year, the Australian Government selected around 30 individuals from the region to undertake leadership training and work experience. Approximately half of the awardees were from Papua New Guinea with the rest from Timor-Leste, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu.
This program included two components:
- A short-term work placement (between one to three months) where awardees were hosted by appropriate Australian workplaces
- Optional individually identified training opportunities, such as attending conferences and workshops.
Scope Global was appointed to manage all aspects of the program on behalf of DFAT. This included developing work placements in close coordination with the private sector and public sector agencies at federal and state levels.
There was substantial evidence to indicate that the program work placements enhanced participants’ professional and leadership skills. Furthermore a tracer study demonstrated positive employment outcomes and career progression for participants as a result of their participation in the program and the professional and personal links that were formed between the participants and their Australian host organisations.
